SHUT UP and RELAX: Interviewing

Practicing interviews was awkward at first.  Then I remembered that interviewing for a job is sometimes awkward at first too so this turned out to be good practice. The hardest thing for me during an interview is to make my point and then to stop talking.  If I don’t make myself clear the first time I answer the question, I tend to keep filling space until I feel like I have made my point, or just talked myself in circles.

After talking about how the interview went answering the questions again went much better. It could have been because I knew what questions were coming but I think the biggest difference was the length of my answers.  I tried hard to think for a second after the question was asked, decide what my point would be, and then to make my point and shut up.  This helped a lot and made me sound more present, and collected.

The best advice I could give someone going into an interview is to RELAX. After the first person practiced with me I tried to relax and not be so afraid while the second person was interviewing me. This made thinking about my answers easier and also took a lot of pressure off when I didn’t know how to answer.

Subject Librarian

Meeting with the librarian was helpful to me.  This is my first semester at BYU and it made a big difference to have the librarian show me around the library site. Specifically, he was helpful in showing me how he does research. He showed me how he looks at how pieces are connected and how they reference each other.  The most useful thing he showed me is how to see what other sources referenced a piece.  I found this tool useful in finding how relevant a source is based on how it has been used by other people in the field.

About Me

About Me: Tel Dyer

I grew up in a small and isolated town called Delta, located in Millard County.  My grandpa was a veterinarian and when the family wasn’t helping at the clinic, we were hunting ducks and geese on the river or in the fields.  I wanted to be a vet growing up but have since taken a liking to computer science and software development.  My major is Computer Science and I plan to graduate in spring of 2019.

I moved to Utah County during elementary school and spent much of my time traveling with my two sisters as a trio singing bluegrass and country music.  I still play the guitar, write music, and travel with professional groups playing music.
